Just southwest of the Town of Bassano sits one of Alberta’s most impressive historic engineering feats — the Bassano Dam. Built between 1910 and 1914, this massive structure forever transformed life in the region, diverting water from the Bow River to create the extensive irrigation network that now sustains 4,800 km of canals, 13 reservoirs, thriving agriculture, and communities across the Eastern Irrigation District. Today, that same system provides water to farms, towns, industries, and wetlands supporting more than 18,000 people.
Visitors to the Bassano Dam can take in expansive views of the spillway and river valley from a scenic lookout equipped with picnic areas — the perfect spot for a peaceful break or photos of the rushing waters below. The area beneath the dam is also well-known for excellent fishing, making it a favourite local getaway for anglers.
For those curious about the inner workings of this historic structure, guided group tours are available and can be booked through the Eastern Irrigation District (EID) at 403.362.1400. Learn how the dam operates today, how it was constructed using more than 300,000 cubic metres of earthen fill, and how a major refurbishment in the 1980s modernized it with new gates and computerized controls.
Whether you’re a history buff, an engineering enthusiast, a photographer, or simply someone who loves scenic views, the Bassano Dam is a must-see stop in the Brooks Newell Region.
