Step back in time and discover the stories that helped shape the Brooks Newell Region at the Brooks & District Museum.
Spread across seven acres on the east side of Brooks, the museum takes visitors on a journey through the area’s rich history — from early ranching and railway development to irrigation, agriculture and the people who helped build the communities we know today.
Begin your visit inside the main museum, where exhibits share the stories of early ranchers, the Canadian Pacific Railway, the Sutherland Colony and legendary cowboy John Ware. Then head outside and follow the boardwalk through a collection of historic buildings and displays, including a one-room schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, CPR station, cowboy bunkhouse, 1930s garage and Alberts’ House — one of the earliest permanent buildings in Brooks and once home to engineers working on the Brooks Aqueduct.
Along the way, discover fascinating local stories, climb aboard a piece of railway history, see a beautifully preserved Ford Model A Roadster Coupe, meet “Cory” the Corythosaurus and look for interactive kiosks featuring historic photos, videos and re-enactments that bring the past to life.
Before you leave, take a stroll through the Heritage Rose Garden and stop by the museum gift shop, where you’ll find locally made pottery, artwork, old-fashioned candy and other unique finds.
The Brooks & District Museum is also home to the Brooks Visitor Information Centre, making it a great first stop when exploring the region.
