Escape to the shores of Lake Newell and discover one of Southern Alberta’s favourite summer destinations. Located just 13 kilometres south of Brooks, Kinbrook Island Provincial Park offers the perfect blend of lakeside relaxation, outdoor adventure, and family-friendly recreation. Lake Newell is one of Southern Alberta’s largest and warmest man-made lakes, making it a popular spot for swimming, boating, paddling, and beach days throughout the summer.
Whether you’re planning a weekend camping getaway or simply looking for a day at the lake, Kinbrook Island has something for everyone. The park features a beautiful sandy beach, spacious day-use areas, picnic sites, playgrounds, and easy access to the water for swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, and power boating. A boat launch makes it easy to get out on the lake and enjoy everything Lake Newell has to offer.
Anglers will find some of Southern Alberta’s best fishing opportunities right here on Lake Newell. Known for producing trophy-sized walleye, northern pike, and yellow perch, the lake attracts recreational and competitive anglers from across the province. Whether you’re casting from shore, launching a boat, or heading out with a local fishing guide, Lake Newell offers excellent fishing throughout the open-water season and is a favourite destination for those chasing their next big catch.
Camping is one of the park’s biggest draws, with nearly 200 campsites available for both RVs and tents, many offering power and convenient access to modern amenities. Shady sites, mature trees, showers, and flush toilets make Kinbrook Island a comfortable home base for exploring the region.
Nature lovers will appreciate the park’s rich birdlife and wetlands. The nearby marshes and interpretive trails provide excellent opportunities for birdwatching, with pelicans, cormorants, shorebirds, and many other species regularly spotted throughout the area. The Kinbrook Marsh Nature Trail offers a peaceful way to explore this unique prairie ecosystem.
For those looking to explore beyond the campground, the Kinbrook Connection Pathway links the park directly to the City of Brooks, providing a scenic route for walking, running, and cycling. Kinbrook Island is also just a 45-minute drive from Dinosaur Provincial Park, making it an excellent addition to any Brooks Region itinerary.

IMPORTANT NOTE: EID Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Program in effect. In 2018, the EID started a mandatory Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Program. All boaters wishing to access EID reservoirs, including Lake Newell, must follow approved prevention procedures and complete a watercraft information and commitment form stating they will not knowingly spread any aquatic invasive species. As part of the program, trailered watercraft must only be launched from approved boat launches and boaters must check in with the campground offices, marina, or the Eastern Irrigation District Office before launching their boat. Canoes, kayaks, and other non-trailered watercraft may continue to be launched at random locations, but the boaters are still required to check in with the campground, marina, or EId office prior to launching. Boaters can go to the EID office, Lake Newell Resort Marina, Rolling Hills Campground, or Crawling Valley Campground to fill out a watercraft information form and commitment form and receive an EID sticker; sticker must be presented prior to launching. Watercrafts Include: motorized (boats, sailboats, zodiacs, etc.) and non-motorized (canoes, kayaks (adult/kid kayaks), paddleboards, sailboats, etc.) For more information, visit the EID Website.
